“Philip K. Dick once said, ‘Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.’

The world is a crazy place. With war, famine, the refugee crisis and, the unholy mess that is Brexit, it’s difficult not become disillusioned. Then there is the drudgery of work, and paying bills, and riding the tube even though its always busy, and then finally relaxing at the end of your day only to find that there is nothing good on the telly, and in a couple of hours you have to do the whole thing again. Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, and in England, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week.

So what can we do in these trying times?

How do we cope with everything that is happening?

We can trying and ignore it, but the problem will still be there. We have to face our thoughts, our demons, and then maybe we can move past them.

This is where the Riddikulusness spell from Harry Potter comes in. In the third book the Professor teaches this spell to the students in order to defect a Bogart. This Bogart can take the form of what fears us and upsets us most. The spell turns the Bogart from what you fear, into something that you find humorous. Like giving a large spider roller-skates. Finding the funny in the despair. To make light of the serious or the painful. It why we can laugh at jokes such as:

“Why does Britain like tea so much? Because tea leaves.”

And why when Ally was making a show about their Crohn’s disease called the show; “Crohn’s is Shit”.

All the puns. Sometimes we need to find the funny in our problems or they can become to much for us.

This is why we have created this show. We wanted to laugh again and make many Harry Potter references as opposed to wallowing in everything that is bad. This is not to say we can push through everything with this technique. The character in the show and the people making said show both have to face their demons but through facing them maybe they can move past them.
